Description & Details of The Blooming Garden Inn
The Inn is located approximately one mile east of Brightleaf Square, the designated center of Durham. We're the first residence on the left, just after the church, as you turn onto Holloway Street from Roxboro Street.
The '500' block in which we are prominently situated was once referred to as 'Mansion Row' and is a designated Historic Area. Within a few miles of the Inn is a wide variety of excellent restaurants and shops. Our house is one of the best Durham Accommodations.
Even closer is the main public library (one block). The Durham Visitors Bureau and the local YMCA are just 4 blocks away. Within five blocks you will find the Civic Center, the Carolina Theater and the Marriott hotel. The Durham Chamber of Commerce is a short six block walk. Just a mile away is the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the start of the American Tobacco biking and walking trail.
The house was built by James N. Umstead around 1890 in the 'Queen Anne' style. It features a huge wraparound porch with 21 Tuscan columns.
Dolly and Frank spent nearly three years in intensive restoration of the property and opened for business in the fall of 1990.
High curved ceilings, heart-pine wainscotting, raised wood panels, nine original mantels, doors (put together with pegs) with original hardware, and all-original Southern Pine flooring will delight the historical buff. Antiques of the period are abundantly distributed throughout. The yard is fully enclosed with custom front fencing and gate. Mature floral gardens and flowering trees highlight the landscaping. The backyard is suitable for private events.
There are four primary guestrooms, each with its own private bath. Each has its own distinctive character and is highlighted by antiques of the period. For the convenience of our guests we are open year-round, including major holidays, except for occasional short vacations during slower periods.
Dolly and Frank Pokrass invite you to join them at the Blooming Garden Inn.
A restful night followed by a special breakfast at the Blooming Garden Inn is a delightful experience.

Features & Amenities of The Blooming Garden Inn
The Inn Features: a wonderful variety of collectibles and antiques in a meticulously restored c. 1890 home of local historic interest. Schedules and formality are conspicuously minimized. The mission of the innkeepers (Frank and Dolly) is to provide, as much as possible, a respite from these; even their antique clocks are not regularly wound to symbolize time-standing-still! But, for those who do wish to keep in touch, wireless DSL and fax is available, along with modem connectors in each of the rooms. Amenities also include cable TV with free HBO/Cinemax Movies on Demand. Need an iron or ironing board? Forgot your toothbrush? Just ask us! Flexible breakfast hours and options for having it served on the columned porch, nicely hidden behind foliage. Dolly is known for her famous '5-minute tour' (her time!) of the town and Frank is the morning gourmet breakfast chef who gladly joins table conversations with interested guests. All rooms have antique beds with firm mattresses for a truly wonderful rest. Choosing one of our fabulous 2-person jacuzzi suites? Lots of hot water and every shower has great water pressure! Compare that with any hotel! Menus of nearby great restaurants are kept on hand and any personal needs gladly accommodated.
