Description & Details of Award Winning Historical Cottage in St. Georges
This fantastically located historical building boasts a full modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances, living/dining area with pull out couch for two extra guests, modern bathroom with shower and heated towel bar, sleeping loft with Double size bed and wardrobe, a private patio, and it is situated in the heart of St. Georges: a World Heritage Site. It has also won the Bermuda National Trust award for restoration of a listed building.
E14 is a newly renovated 200 year old Bermuda stone structure. It has been owned by the same family for at least 100 years. In recent times it was a store which sold yarn for knitting. It has also been used as a place for making flower arrangements, and quite possibly in early 1900 and late 1800s as a barn. In 2010 the family decided to renovate this listed building as it was falling into disrepair and have now added an old Bermuda style water tank and an addition housing the new bathroom, laundry and stairs to the sleeping loft. As a listed building the family had to adhere to some pretty specific building requirements, such as all additions had to be carried out in sympathy to the architecture of the time period and windows, blinds and doors where to be made of wood.

During the excavation of the waste water / sewage pits, the foundations of an 1820s church were found. This church was known as the Independent Church of St. Georges, and constructed for the congregation of Protestant Dissenters from the established church.. This Church only lasted a few years, it built in 1820, consecrated and opened on April 1 1821 and closed in 1824 due to the death of the presiding minister the Rev. H.H. Cross. Present at the dedication was well known Baptist Minister Rev. Duncan Dunbar and Presbyterian Minister Rev. M. Gray. Some of the walls and a few stairs can been seen at the southern end of the front entry patio.

The property is located a short 5 min walk from the historic town of St. Georges, with a fantastic choice of restaurants, bars, and shopping. There are several restaurants a short walk from the property, so you will have plenty of great eateries to choose from!

There is the Supermart in town and a convenience store Ample Hamper, which means that replenishments are never far away of your larder needs to be topped up. There is also a pharmacy nearby, which is about a 5 minute walk from the property. After a day of sightseeing in St.George, groceries can be picked up on your way home from Somers Market. We suggest bringing frozen steaks or fish and some liquor/wine/beer with you as you are allowed to import some for your own use. It saves time and ensures you have those steaks cut just the way you like them.

There are two bus stops near the property, which are a two minute walk, and a 10 minute walk. The ferry stop isnt far either, about a 5 minute walk from the cottage! There are also buses leaving from the nearby town centre regularly heading over to the west part of the island, including the capital city of Hamilton

A mini-bus service operates as well out to St. Davids and into St. Georges, but its a pretty walk into town and wont take long unless you stop to admire all the flowers and the charming gardens on your way. Bus/ferry passes are obtained by stopping off at the post office on your way to the cottage or stepping into the local post office.

Snorkelling and swimming at nearby beaches including some dazzling, rarely visited ones. Tobacco Bay is a 10 minute walk from the cottage, which is a great beach for snorkelling in the calm waters. St. Catherines Beach and Blackbeards Beach are both a 15 minute walk from the property, and Clearwater Beach and St. Davids Beach are a 20 minute drive, in St.Davids. Clearwater beach and the old NASA Station in a new 77 acre park called Coopers Island- a collection of sparkling sand beaches and endless horizons, turtles, groves of native trees and flowers- just spell binding.

The former capital of Bermuda, the Town of St. Georges is just a 5 minute walk away, but will take you back nearly 400 years to 1612. Sites to see, all within walking distance of the property, include: St.Peters Church, The Stella Maris Catholic Church, St.Georges Town Square, The Unfinished Church, Fort St.Catherines, Deliverance Ship Replica, Somers Gardens, and St.Davids Lighthouse.

The town of St.Georges is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the English New World. The extraordinary atmosphere of the town is captured not in its gentrification but in the fact the folks live in these ancient buildings (cleverly modernized) and that the ongoing matter of everyday business has somehow been managed within the confines of a pretty town with winding roads and oddly shaped buildings perched curbside. Its history embraces many roles: a thriving frontier town, military and naval outpost and colonial capital to name but a few. Crammed now with pretty shops and attractive cafes, it is centered on a beautiful waterfront square, with museums and galleries just steps away, including a replica of the Deliverance. This tiny ship carried early settlers on to Jamestown, Virginia after a year of collecting food and ship- building. Their arrival with much needed supplies after their terrible shipwreck saved the colony. There is a fine park behind the town, gorgeous gardens and churches to explore.

Buses run into Hamilton and beyond to the fabled south shore coastal beaches, Somerset and Dockyard, and there is a ferry service into Hamilton as well As the island is only 22 miles long, even at the sedate pace of 14 to 20 miles an hour, you can explore the entire island comfortably from your taxi, on the mopeds or by public transportation. These services include excellent bus and ferry service into Hamilton and a mini bus service which will come and collect you for a modest fee.

The Mid-Ocean Golf Course and Tuckers Point Resort are less than 15 minutes away by taxi or by bus, and there is Ocean View in Devonshire and the Princess, Belmont and Riddells Bay courses as well as Port Royal as you proceed west along the island.

RATE INCLUDES reasonable electricity and water consumption, understanding always that these are precious and scarce utilities and that everyone in Bermuda conserves assiduously by turning lights and ac off when you go out and never letting taps run on. Locking up is the same prudent exercise in Bermuda as it is when you leave your own home; close the windows and leave the unit secure please. Included are local telephone calls but long distance calls will require a calling card. Check with your cell phone provider to see if your phone will operate overseas and arrange a good plan before you go so as to avoid hefty charges. It is customary to leave a gratuity for the maid.

A boat rental or charter will permit you to explore the wonderful collection of islands, bird sanctuaries, old forts and spectacular beaches that are situated in the Castle Harbour area. You can drift down the coast and admire the palaces of Tuckers Town where the elite from around the world have built their luxurious hideaways. With a picnic and a case of cool drinks, this could be the most relaxed day of your vacation.
