The upper Tiber valley (or Valtiberina) lies to the east of Tuscany and takes its name from the river which flows through it into the upper corner of Umbria. Valtiberina was not only a borderland but also a meeting point amongst different civiliations; the Umbrians and truscans, the Bizantine and Longobards. Arezzo's bishops, Rimini's landlords, Rome's Popes and finally Florentines fought for centuries to dominate these mountains and this valley. Roman Augustian patrician people discovered its beauty and built their villas here. Then came the period of feudatories and abbots who built solid castles and set up monasteries, whilst many Saints discovered hidden places to satisfy their mystic passion. Michelangelo, born among these mountains perceived life in stone. Piero della Francesca, in his ome town of Sansepolcro, learnt the secret of space and light which are expressed in his painting. In the variety of architectonic styles and local customs, in artisan pieces and in the language itself, Valtiberina shows variegated influences, coming from Romagna, Marche and Umbria. These all work together to determine the eccentric peculiarity of this valley compared with the Tuscan reality. The difficult pass between the two sides of the central Appennine mountains has contributed to the relative isolation of this valley where as Sansepolcro and Città di Castello have pursued a leading Role and cultural identity. omplete walled towns such as Anghiari, Citerna or river centres such as Pieve Santo Stefano, Camaldolite abbeys and Franciscan monasteries, medieval parish churches and castles tell the story of this charming world and show the visitors the most impressive and various routes. The upper Tiber valley is crossed through its entire length by the principle Tiber road and E 45 highway, which joins Rome to north Italy, crossing the Appennine mountains near The Tiber sorgents. Other roads connect Valtiberina to Arezzo, Val di Chiana, Casentino (to the west), Romagna (to the north), Montefeltro and Adriatic sea (to the east).
