When road 301 becomes pitted sand, you'll find Las Salinas, the salt flats of Cabo Rojo - mined since the early 1500's - where the water has a pinkish tinge. A wooden lookout provides an overview of the flats, and a visitor's center provides information on the area. At the end of the road you'll find paradise La Playuela, a beautiful crescent of white sand beach. A top the hill is the dramatic setting of Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (El Faro). You can also strike out on bird-watching trails at the Cabo Rojo Wildlife Refuge or catch road 101 west to the beach town of Boquerón, a long popular vacation spot.
