Wildlife Viewing
Camping & Hiking
Walk, hike, mountain bike, or sit outside to watch our local wildlife. Regular visitors include mule deer, peccaries (javalinas), coyotes, gray fox, bobcats, Harris' ground squirrels, rock squirrels, desert cottontails, spiny lizards, and a wide variety of birds, which are most active and abundant during our summer monsoon season (mid-July through early September).

Common birds in our area include the roadrunner, cactus wren, curve-billed thrasher, Gila woodpecker, gilded flicker, Gambel's quail, white-wing dove, mourning dove, inca dove, red-tailed hawk, Harris' hawk, great horned owl, screech owl, elf owl, lesser nighthawk, brown towhee, black-tailed gnatcatcher, pyrrhuloxia, and several species of hummingbirds (far more abundant in Ramsey Canyon).

If you're attentive and lucky, you'll cross paths with a desert tortoise, a horny toad (actually a lizard), or a Gila monster. Gila monsters are large, lumbering lizards—venomous but shy—that spend more than 95% of their lives underground. And yes, we have tarantulas and scorpions (worth learning about but not to be feared) and rattlesnakes (to be watched out for, but seldom seen on our property). Hosting approximately 1,200 species of native bees, the Tucson Mountains region is regarded by experts as the richest known parcel of bee real estate in the world! So you'll see many species of colorful bees visiting our flowering trees, shrubs, and cacti in the spring and summer months.
