Background History

Tavolese Castle dates back to the first half of the 13th century. Its oldest known inhabitants were the Uberti family, whose son Manente was nicknamed “Farinata” because of his yellow blonde hair. Manente was a nobleman of the Ghibelline faction and as such, was a proud supporter of the emperor against the pope. Born into one of the oldest and most important Florentine families, he was mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy in two different chants.
