BEACH EXPLORING: If you are an aficionado of great beaches, you could not pick a better base than San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The beach right in town would draw raves in most parts of the world. Besides being within walking distance of your villa at Bahia del Sol, the town beach has the big advantage of being sheltered and most of the time the surf is quiet and suitable for children.

But if you want isolation and beaches that will really blow your mind, you'll need to travel a few miles either south or north. Renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle is probably a good idea since most of the best beaches are on unpaved and sometimes poorly maintained roads. Best Beaches to the north: Marsella, Maderas, and Majagual. Best Beaches to the south: El Coco and La Flor.

TURTLE WATCHING :La Flor, a protected wildlife reserve is the most famous beach in Nicaragua because of the mass arrival of Olive Ridely turtles that takes place periodically every year between July and January. During certain nights there may be thousands of turtles who come to lay eggs at this one beach. Hundreds of thousands of eggs hatch about 50 days later and the baby turtles scramble to reach the ocean before the birds reach them.

SAILING: Those who like company and a little more comfort when visiting beaches would probably enjoy a sailing trip on the Pelican Eyes Sailing Adventures, which is an all day affair that includes food, fishing, and snorkeling. FISHING: Marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, and yellowfin tuna can be caught offshore. The inshore waters hold rooster fish, sierra mackerel, jack crevalle, bonitos, barracudas, snapper and grouper. Both half and full-day trips are offered. Prices depend mainly on the size of the boat and whether the fishing will be done inshore or offshore. A panga usually costs between $150-200 for a half day. A 23-foot Sea Craft will cost around $400. Superfly is a professional fishing operator with larger boats available that can be reserved on line.

SURFING: Unlike Costa Rica to the south, Nicaragua's best surf breaks are not spread out all over the country but concentrated along its SW Pacific coastline in the province of Rivas - right where San Juan del Sur is located. It is possible to surf right off the town beach of San Juan del Sur most days. But better breaks are found at more isolated beaches both north and south of town. Since the roads to some of these surf spots are poor or non-existent, really serious surfers either rent a 4x4 or often hire a boat to carry them along the coast to wherever the best action is.

ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES: Tourism is still relatively undeveloped in Nicaragua. You won't find dozens of zip lines and organized adventure tours like those that clutter Costa Rica today. But the number is growing and even now you can find snorkeling trips, ATV expeditions, kayaking, horseback riding, guided hikes, and the popular canopy zip line.

CANOPY TOUR: Da Flying Frog, the longest canopy tour in Nicaragua, is located only five minutes from the town of San Juan del Sur. The tour starts at the top of one of the hills, which has a superb view of the bay of San Juan del Sur and its surroundings. You can see animals including monkeys, raccoons, birds, and other animals. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the whole canopy tour. The canopy tour costs US$25 per person. Free transportation provided from and to San Juan del Sur for groups.

RESTAURANTS and BARS: Can you remember when a terrific fresh lobster dinner at a waterfront restaurant cost less than $10 and a cold beer cost less than a buck? El Timon: Located on the beach, El Timon features fresh seafood with a view as great as its food and prices.

Las Cascadas: Located at the Pelican Eyes Resort above town, this is the most expensive, but probably the best, restaurant in San Juan del Sur. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Marie's Bar: Features European cuisine and seafood under German ownership. Also has a used book lending library if you need something to read.

Ricardo's Bar: According to Ricardo, /We should have called it Rick's Cafe Americain, because like the fabled dive in the movie, Ricardo's is a meeting place, an international crossroads, for artists, beachcombers, gamblers, divas, drinkers and simple travelers. People come to Ricardo's on the beach to sip a reflective Flor de Cana rum, while watching one of San Juan del Sur's famed sunsets, said to be the most spectacular in Central America; or to listen to tall tales from anglers and surfers who crowd the long wooden bar each evening.

To hold your reservation, a 50% deposit is required of the total quoted fees with the remaining amount to be paid within 45 days of the reserved date. Also, you will need to supply a valid credit card as security deposit during your stay.



Cancellation is allowed 45 days or more before the reservation date with a written request. There is no refund for cancellation made 44 days or fewer prior to the reservation. When your cancellation is approved, you will get a full refund minus 10% penalty of the entire cost of the reservation or you can opt to receive full credit to be used on your next reservation.
