The Dalles Dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1952-57. At 260 feet high and 8,875 feet long, it is the longest concrete and fourth largest power-producing dam in the U.S. The hydroelectric facility produces enough electricity to serve a city the size of Seattle. Located at the head of the slackwater pool created by Bonneville Dam, it impounds a reservoir that provides ship passage 25 miles upstream to John Day Dam. Visitors can take a train ride from Seufert Park Interpretive Center.
