Description & Details of Stunning Paris Art Deco Duplex Townhouse
IN RESPONSE TO POPULAR DEMAND... I have made my apartment in Paris available for short-term rentals on a highly selective basis. Everybody, of course, wants to know what highly selective means.

It means... compulsively neat, thoroughly housebroken non-smokers who would be aesthetically troubled by a crooked painting; who learned at an early age not to roller blade in the living room or finger-paint on the sofa; and who always remember to wipe their feet, turn off the stove, and take the key.

If this describes you and you are contemplating a vacation in Paris but are daunted by the thought of overpriced hotels, outstretched palms, $4 local phone calls, and planning the day around the chambermaid, please read further for more information.

THE APARTMENT:
The apartment is an elegant duplex on a private street in a 1930s art deco building. It's furnished in a comfortable yet minimalist style with many modern classics from the 20's and 30's by such designers as Mies Van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Eileen Gray.

On the first floor are the living room with its dramatic 22-foot high ceiling, a dining area, powder room, and modern kitchen. A sweeping stairway leads to the second floor which consists of a master bedroom with a queen-size bed, a large bathroom with an oversized tub and separate shower, and a study that overlooks the living room. There's loads of closet space for clothes and suitcases.

The apartment is luxuriously ideal for two. Depending on the degree of intimacy shared by various guests, however, the main apartment can sleep up to five persons: two upstairs in the master bedroom; two in the living room on a nice, firm B&B Italia sofabed; and one more in the living room on a day bed.

LOCATION:
The apartment is in the 16th Arrondissement, long known as one of the most fashionable and beautiful sections of Paris. It is an area of elegant boulevards, stylish boutiques, and bustling neighborhood centers. Yet the broad, tree-lined streets give you more breathing room than in the crowded and noisy tourist districts. Guests say that staying at the apartment makes them feel like Parisians instead of visitors.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD:
The apartment is just steps from the colorful neighborhood center. Within half a block are two supermarkets, several bakeries, fruit and green grocers, cheese and wine shops, a butcher, and a convenience market that stays open late as well as on Sundays. You'll also find ATMs, florists, a pharmacy, cafs and brasseries, a photo shop, dry cleaners, video store, hair salons, gourmet food takeout shops, as well as restaurants.

The post office is a block away. A few blocks farther you'll find a modern indoor public swimming pool, the Ranelagh Gardens and Muse Marmottan, indoor and outdoor food markets, and the chic boutiques on Rue de Passy and Avenue Victor Hugo. A five- to ten-minute walk takes you to the Bois de Boulogne which, with its lakes, woods, and gardens, is a great place to jog if, heaven forbid, you're into that sort of thing.

GETTING AROUND PARIS;
Paris is a walker's city. The Eiffel Tower, Trocadero, Arc de Triomphe, and Champs Elyses are all within easy strolling distance of the apartment. Of course, you could take a day getting to any of these spots since there are so many wonderful sights, shops, and cafs along the way.

Public transportation in Paris is superb and easy to use. You'll have no trouble getting anyplace you want in the city.

The Mtro stop is a block-and-a-half away. This line takes you to the Champs Elyses, the famous department stores downtown, the Opera, Bateaux Mouches, Trocadero, Eiffel Tower, and many other places you'll want to visit. You can change to the #1 line which goes to the Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde, Tuileries, Palais Royale, Muse du Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Place des Vosges, Marais, and Bastille - just to name a few of the attractions.

There are two bus routes that stop within a block of the apartment, as well as several more you can catch a few blocks farther away. One goes to the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elyses, rue du Faubourg St. Honor (famous for its fancy stores), the Madeleine, and the Opra in the heart of the downtown shopping district where Galeries Lafayette and Au Printemps have their main stores.

The other route is great for sightseeing and visiting a lot of Paris's attractions and interesting neighborhoods. It goes past the Trocadero, crosses the Seine at the Pont de l'Alma, and has wonderful views of the river and Place de la Concorde. The bus then goes along Boulevard St. Germain to the heart of the left bank and the Latin quarter. You can take this bus to the Bateaux Mouches, Tuileries, Muse d'Orsay, Invalides, Luxembourg Gardens, Sorbonne, Notre Dame, and many other places you'll want to see.

This is a rare and stunning apartment for the discriminating traveler who appreciates and knows how to care for fine surroundings. No smoking and, sorry, no pets. Children welcome as long as their parents are well behaved.

Reviews for Stunning Paris Art Deco Duplex Townhouse
My wife and I are both artists and have visited Paris on many occasions for both business and pleasure. This year is very special as it is our 50th. wedding anniversary, and we wanted an apartment that would be a pleasure to live in for our Paris celebration. I did some very extensive internet research for apartment rentals and late in the search I found the "Home Away" web site with the photos of the Art Deco duplex. We were immediately drawn to the elegant feel and beauty of the apartment. I contacted the apartment owner, an American living on the east coast and made our reservations in a simple and straightforward manner, with no misunderstandings or communications problems. Prior to our Paris flight, the owner send us via E mail a set of three booklets which covered: Tips for getting from the airport, Apartment essentials, Local restaurants and shops, Maps for favorite walks, and Metro and taxi connections. Upon our arrival at 9am in the morning, we were greeted by the English speaking housekeeper and given a bottle of Bordeaux wine with fruits and cheese. The apartment is an Art Deco treasure, beginning with the front door and window which is at least 20 feet in height. Inside, an elegant Art Deco stair case leads to the upper floor which has the master bedroom, office computer area and a very luxurious white bathroom with a large tub and very cozy shower. The downstairs kitchen is very efficient and has a combination clothes washer and dryer. Don't forget the small powder room located off the kitchen! You are also provided with free international phone calls to land lines in most international countries. The apartment has a very complete library of Art Deco and Art Nouveau books, as well as an extensive collection of books detailing the history of Paris and France. There is also a diverse CD musical collection and a quality sound system. Original Art Deco objects and Barcelona chairs complete the very tasteful museum like atmosphere. The rental price of the apartment is very reasonable, located in an upscale area, it is a far better bargain than the over priced five star hotels. Be certain to plan well in advance for your reservations, as the rental schedule can be filled several weeks in advance.

As I embark on my 7th visit to Alex's apartment, I decided that I must write a review on "my Parisian home". This is the best home away from home you could ever imagine. The ultra modern decor is very inviting. Prior to 2007, I used to stay in luxury hotels near the Champs Elysees or across from the Opera. Very expensive and it was just a tiny room with a tiny bathroom. Alex's apartment is more than an apartment, it's a townhouse with all of the amenities. Full kitchen with everything you need if you dare cook. Eating area is surrounded by beautiful artwork. Two supermarkets, two fresh fruit and vegetable stores, and two bakeries are within a 4 minute walk. You are also five minutes from the metro or a nice walk to the Trocadero, which has the most fabulous views of the Eiffel Tower (perfect photo opportunity). It's so nice to come back to the house after a day in all of the touristy areas to a nice relaxing home. I usually warm up a towel on the towel warmer in the bathroom, run a bath, and play one of the many jazz cds in the music library after a busy day of museums and hopping. Oh, and did I mention Mona.....what a dear. She is there to greet you with fresh bread and cheese. She's American so there is no language barrier if you do not speak french. She's an expat and knows everything about Paris. She can advise on the best mode of transportation or the best flea markets. This is a location that I can definitely recommend, but please don't try to book my weeks in the Spring.

We couldn't be more pleased with our trip to Paris and our two weeks at your apartment. We usually stay at the Ritz and have never rented an apartment in Paris, so I must say we were a bit wary of trying something new. But now, we really do consider your apartment our home there. Your apartment is beautiful, spacious, clean and quiet. Our every need was met. Thank you so much for the welcome gift of wine, cheese and bread. Mona is a delight; and it was a great comfort to know that an English-speaking person was always available just in case. We took advantage of your large, well-organized library of Paris travel guides, literature and music. We loved the neighborhood and found it so convenient that everything we needed was within a few blocks reach. We highly recommend the owner, Alex, and his apartment. If you want to feel like you're really living in the City of Light instead of just visiting, this is the perfect place!

To say the least, we were ecstatic with your apartment. Everything about it was perfect including the greeting from Mona, location, size, furnishings, free phone service to the US, electrical converters, wifi, books, maps, fans in every room, washer, clothes hanger/dryer, nearby shopping, bakeries, restaurants, etc., etc., etc.). We will absolutely share information on the apartment with family and friends and hope to stay again in the near future.

Nancy and I had a wonderful stay in your delightful Paris apartment. Thank you so much for your hospitality and for sharing such a jewel with us. We had high expectations based on your description of the apartment, and we were not disappointed. In fact, we find ourselves answering questions about our Paris trip with first an extended description of your apartment and its many comforts. I believe many of our friends are left with the impression that we never ventured from the apartment! But we did, and we thoroughly enjoyed the convenience of the location when we explored the many sights of Paris, and relaxing in your apartment when we returned after a long day of sightseeing. I particularly enjoyed your extensive jazz collection; Nancy loved your library of Paris guide books. Mona met us on arrival and proved to be as nice and as helpful as advertised. Please thank her again for the both of us. Not only did she provide us with a complete tour of the apartment and operating instructions for the appliances, she also gave us a short tour of the neighborhood and the closely located cafes. I am especially glad that we later saw her in the grocery store since she prevented me from buying baby formula instead of milk for my coffee. Once again, thank you for sharing your Paris apartment with us. We hope we can visit again soon.

The apartment was absolutely wonderful! It completely lived up to its billing, in comfort, location, beauty and practicality. You did a wonderful job decorating it (I'd love to know the origin of the space). Everything we could want or need was provided, with the sole exception of a salad spinner! So when we had friends over for dinner one evening, we just spread out the paper towels and dried the salad that way. But fear not for the environment: I used the damp towels for wipe-ups until they could absorb no more. Your collection of books is remarkable and the posters and photos on the walls are beautiful. Did you take the black and white photos in the dining area and the bedroom? Mona was extremely efficient and helpful and I'm glad she was happy with the way we left the apartment. I think the wonderful care you put into it deserves good care from your tenants as well. I would have no hesitation in renting your apartment again. In the meantime, I have been raving about it to friends, so if anyone else is interested, I'll let you know. It is without any doubt the best way to stay in Paris, far better than a hotel. Congratulations on a beautiful place and your wonderful management of it as well. And I love how you've organized all the guide books by subject. We couldn't have asked for more. Thank you.

We flew in from London last night and we are already missing Paris! London was wonderful, despite the heavy pound, but it does not stimulate one's inner magic like Paris does. Katelin took to Paris like a natural. (The fact that she met two very nice guys from Boulder, Colorado at Trocadero didn't hurt matters any.) With your fabulous suggestions and directions, Katelin navigated the city perfectly. We visited all the usual tourist sights but our favorite spot was this beautiful flat and the surrounding area. Your apartment is everything and more than you suggested. The kitchen was so well equipped and begged for my attention. As a result, we ate dinner out on only one occasion. Claudine took me to a market that she frequents but I couldn't begin to tell you which one it was. What a fabulous display of culinary treats! I raved about you and your place before I saw it and now I am your new biggest fan. I can't begin to tell you how valuable the visitors packet was. I wasted a lot of time reading travel books. We referred to your suggestions and instructions for our every move. You truly made our trip the fabulous vacation that it was! Glad to hear you will be making it to Paris on the 17th. If I were you I would be staying all summer. We are already planning our return visit.

We've stayed in many different places in Paris over the years, but we'll now never stay anywhere but this apartment. We found it perfect....both the apartment and the location. Our most favourable comment is that we recommended it to friends, who stayed there and also found it wonderful. Our first comments were written in 2005, after a week of our month long stay: Our first week is drawing to a close, and we wanted to share our delight in our stay in your Paris home. We were greeted by Mona as promised, and by lovely roses in vases on both floors. We're still enjoying the cheeses, which are in good company with others we've since selected. The bottle of wine was a nice treat with the cheese, the baguette and the fresh fruit for our first meal. It was wonderful not to have to shop for staples, not even coffee or bottled water. Thank you so much. The neighbourhood is also a delight. Robin walked the Lac Inferieur yesterday, though the pathways are a bit soft from the melted snow. At least it melted! We've sampled a few of the local restaurants, highlighted by Tang a few feet from the apartment. Tonight, we prepared a four course meal for our friends and completed our first round of appliance education. It's always a bit tricky using someone else's stove, but the roast was cooked perfectly. Thank you also for the very comprehensive package of notes, reviews and instructions. They've proven very helpful, and eased our transition to the neighbourhood. The shopping on Rue de la Pompe is wonderful. I can't think of a problem to complain about...you have a wonderful home and provide wonderful hospitality. Thank you.

I had seen the pictures and heard what others had to say about staying there, and yet nothing prepared me for just how wonderful a place your apartment is Paris is fabulous and Paris is lovely and there's nothing like it in the world, but having the chance to really live IN it changes everything. I miss the surrounding neighborhood every day; how I wish I could stop by Paul for coffee before work! I honestly don't think that this trip would have been as magnificent even at the Ritz. As I said to a friend, when you walk into a hotel, the magic disappears; you could be anywhere once you pass the lobby. At your apartment, being at home is still part of the experience. (And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Mona. She is a character unlike any other. Sweet, charming, incredibly helpful, she is certainly a selling point.) I just can't imagine staying anyplace else. I am officially spoiled.

It was indeed a great experience to be able to stay in your apartment for such an extended period of time. The apartment is without question the best one we have ever stayed in Paris. The location is excellent and we used the combination of 63 and 52 bus lines and the metro to cover everywhere. We walked all over the 16th district and our after dinner stroll along the Seine and Eiffel Tower became our favorite almost instantaneously. We thank you for allowing us to stay at your apartment. Mona is a remarkable lady and took good care of us too. Our sons enjoyed their visit immensely and we had a great reunion in Paris. We could not ask for a better way to spend the vacation together. We hope that this is the beginning of a long relationship. Our memory of Paris will not disappear. We love Paris! Thank you again, Alex. Let us stay in touch! Give our best to Mona!
