Symivilla Vacation Rental ID#305168
An old stone House on the photogenic culturally protected island of Symi, Greece, an hour by boat from the major tourist and charter flight destination of Rodos (Rhodes), yet remote from mass tourism. Perched in the Upper Town of Chorio, the House had suffered from abandonment and wartime damage. It was restored and adapted to modern living by its architect owner who retained and enhanced some of the soaring open plan and exposed stone features of the original in combination with contemporary rendition of traditional detailing. Most of the compact Town of Symi is accessed ...Read More

Symivilla Vacation Rental Description (Cont.)
...from picturesque lanes and stone steps. Conversely, the length and width of the island and its many hiking takeoff points can be reached by vehicle or by water taxi to its mostly secluded beaches, where cars and motorcycles are mercifully absent. Temperatures in winter rarely fall below the teens and in the summer can reach into the 40's (the reward is that the sea is swimmable well into the fall). In the summer Symi hosts an increasingly multicultural and sophisticated festival.

SymivillaThe House is best described on its web site www. symivilla. com. For those wanting a quick overview, it has two wings that can be separately occupied, the larger of which also contains a small autonomous bedsitting-and-bath room for yet another occupant or a teenager who wants to be left alone. Plans and photos are on the web site, which should also be visited for full rental information. The NeighborhoodLocated in the quiet upper part of Symi, which is renowned for its dollhouse-like collection of buildings climbing up its hillsides, the House and its setting are best described on its web site www. symivilla. com. It and the nearby Archaeological and Folklore Museum are reached via a 100 meter stone-paved lane from the taxi or bus drop-off of Lieni. The Island has small expatriate colonies from the major EU countries and a thriving tourism industry that culminates in the summertime Festival.

Attractions:Restaurants Galleries/Museums Ocean Mountains Diving Hiking

Other InformationOne can reach Symi either by (charter) flight to the nearby major tourist destination of Rodos, or by a flight to Athens and then by large overnight ferry to Rodos; from Rodos it is a short ferry or hydrofoil ride to Symi. Arrangements are in place to direct renters to taxi, to deliver keys to them, etc. We advise against bringing pets because of the presence of a number of strays on the island. Cars (and their rental) do exist on Symi, to the chagrin of foreign expatriates living there.

In its early 20th century heyday as a sponge fishing center, Symi had a population ten times its present 2000 permanent residents, and the relative sophistication of a prosperous town. Its recovery after the collapse of the sponge fishery was slow until recently, when the Town really took off as a tourism center. Yet its past is ever present and interesting in its urban fabric, its stately old homes (many still in ruins), its museums and displays.
