A stately old-fashioned coziness is our aim. The furnishings of our San Juan accommodation are solid and discreet, with a Spanish-Caribbean flair. The staff, and hosts, David Richards and Natalia Vidal, are bilingual and will make a point of learning your name, and helping with directions to restaurants in the area, sightseeing tours, and night life.
The first floor and foyer have high ceilings, mirror-like grey marble floors, and stained-glass windows. Here are an art gallery and a display of local artisans’ handcrafts. There are two small gift shops; one sells the same aromatic coffee that is served at breakfast time, as well as tropical jams, jellies, and sweets made by the hostess and local businesses. The other displays artworks created by the same local artisans. On this floor, which remains TV-free, you will find a small library and a table for writing or working on your laptop.
Going up the flight of marble stairs, you will reach the second floor bedrooms. The “Cordoba” honeymoon/master suite features privacy and subdued elegance: Hardwood and marble floors, a spacious marble Roman tub with two shower heads, and stained-glass windows. There are a chaise lounge, table, and chairs in the living area with a door to the terrace. If you open the windows you will hear the songs of native birds. The other bedrooms, although small, are bright, offer comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and ample closet and storage space.
The “Salon Sevillano”, on the third floor opens onto a spacious terrace surrounded by tree tops and native birds. A traditional breakfast is served in this spacious area, as is the evening meal, if you choose the meal plan. This floor’s ambience combines flowering vines intertwined on “pergolas,” ironwork and rattan furnishings, and an inviting openness. On this floor you will also find the Jacuzzi for cooling off after tanning on the sundeck.
The evening meals offer native and international cuisine prepared by the hostess; they include white or red Sangria and dessert. We offer a small selection of wines from California, South America, and Europe upon request, as well as cordials and aperitifs for before or after dinner.
The sundeck on the roof has lounge chairs, a gazebo, sofa, and chairs. Here you will be surrounded by the hostess’ organic vegetable and herb garden, with planters full of tropical flowers and miniature fruit trees.
Throughout Casa Castellana you will find secluded areas that offer privacy for reading, working, and entertaining guests.
