Butter Fly Farm
The Butter Fly Farm you can walk amongst the rare and exotic butterflies, from around the world flying freely in the tropical paradise, with music, flowers and fresh waterfalls.
Grand Case
The sweeping curve of the beach at Grand Case near the northern tip of the island shelters a little fishing village that is famous not only for its fine foods but also for its distinctive style of architecture. Elaborate carvings and fretwork, in what is called a gingerbread style, adorn the fronts of the small wooden houses painted in pastel colors, and the effect is truly charming. Some of the island's best restaurants also happen to be located in this area, including local dishes at barbecue stands called Lolo's and souvenir shops. Do not miss the Tuesday night festivities during high season on the Blfd de Grand-Case.
Pic Paradis (Paradise Peak)
The highest point on the island is 424m at Pic Paradis. The peak is accessable by road which doubles as a hiking trail.
The climate of St Martin is basically dry, except for Pic Paradis which receives a lot more rain than down on the lowlands. On the way up the vegetation gets thicker the higher you climb. The air gets a little cooler also so it's a good place to live, you'll see some beautiful homes one the way. Once at the top there are some great views of Orient Bay, Orleans, Philipsburg, Marigot and Simpson Bay Lagoon.
A free map is available from the tourist office for those who'd like to do some serious hiking. There are trails leading from Pic paradis to Orient Bay, Orleans and the Dutch side of the island.
The road to Pic Paradis is just past the turnoff to Columbier.
Fly Zone
Treetop Adventure ParkAn exhilarating traverse course and variety of zip-lines suspended high above a private forest reserve soaring between 200 year old mango and mahagony trees. You will also find a special area with suspended bridges, swinging ropes and more for children. Miles of well groomed hiking trails and the Hidden Forest Cafe make the experience complete.
Pinel Island
Pinel Island lies in Orient Bay, access is via boats that run from Cul de Sac. Some of the watersport concessions on Orient Beach also will drop you off on Pinel Is.and return at a set time to pick you up.
There are beautiful sandy beaches on the island and it is also worth to take some hiking shoes and hike to the two deserted beaches on the opposite side.
There is are three restaurants on the island, the Le Karabuni, who specialise in lobster (tel. 06 90 39 67 00) The Yellow Beach restaurant (tel. 06 90 33 88 33 / 05 90 77 15 00) who have a BBQ and Up on the Key (tel. 0690-77-35-47) There is also the island style Paradisio Gift Shop that specialises in beautiful pareos.
Pinel is often called St Martins best kept secret and has always been popular with locals. The main beach is not clothes optional. Although it is a different story if you hike (only a 5-10 minute walk) over to one of the deserted beaches. So, don't forget to take along some sneakers and snorkeling gear.
Tintamarre Island. An 80 acre island that once had it's own king, navy, and airline. True!
Situated to the East of the Orleans quarter of St.Martin, at a distance of approximately three quarters of a league, it could be about two and a half leagues around: there is still woodland on this island and the land is very clean to take the air and also for cotton plants. The coastline of this island is the most abundant in fish in the surrounding area, and you can also find there many masonry stones and stones out of which limestone [lime?] can be made. Letter of October, 1764: Current state of the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy signed by Auguste Descoudrelles Governor of French St Martin from 1763 to 1785.
Ile Tintamarre, often known locally as Flat Island, seemingly has had three periods of at least transitory activity. The first was in the 18th century when, after the French had retrieved it from the English, who had held it for some 40 years, it. had approximately 150 inhabitants. Then, like so much of the land on both the Dutch and French sides, it came into the possession of the van Romondt family. The final phase came in the middle of the Twentieth century, when Tintamarre heralded the development of air transportation in this area, which we take for granted today.
After the French took possession from the English, a dispute arose over the island's sovereignty. The island was owned by a succession of persons from St.Christopher (St.Kitts). They resisted French efforts to take possession of the island. Their ownership was never in doubt, but their allegiance was not to the French King or the governments that followed. It must be remembered that St.Martin was regularly changing hands at this time; the end of the eighteenth century leading up to the Napoleonic wars.
Bayside Riding Club
Ride along St. MArtin's most beautiful bay. One and a half miles of white sand beach and scenic trails wander through the Island's Nature Marine REserve. The highlight of the two hour ride is swimming with hour horse in the calm crystal waters of the bay. Stop for a complimentary drink at Tropical Wave, a restaurant set at the far end of this majestic beach.
Tennis & Squash
Tennis remains one of the favorite pastimes in St. Martin, and there are more than 70 courts over the whole island. Many of these are to be found in the hotels, and squash is available at a number of sports clubs and fitness centers. Tennis pros are on hand in several of these places to give instruction for a modest fee. It should be kept in mind that appropriate attire, although not necessarily tennis whites, is required on nearly all of the courts.
Golf
The one 18-hole golf course on the island is located on the Dutch side of St. Maarten nearby at Mullet Bay. The course is open to all visitors; call ahead to reserve a slot.
Dining & Dancing
St. Martin is perhaps most famous for its restaurants and the elegance of its cuisine. From the most sumptuous of French delicacies to the tangy blends of Creole cooking to more exotic tastes like Chinese and East Indian, the island provides a wide variety of restaurants, bistros, brassieres, and barbecue shacks called lolos that delight even the most sophisticated of gourmets. The St. Martinois take a deserved pride in their cooking, which approaches something of an art form here. For dinner at most of the more fashionable dining spots, reservations are definitely recommended, although usually they are not necessary at lunch time. Many places also provide music for dancing, as do the many nightclubs around the island. Bands play a variety of zouk, calypso, reggae, jazz, and pop.
Duty-Free Shopping
One of the great attractions of the island has been the duty-free shopping available on both sides of the island. Luxury items from all over the world, French and Italian clothing fashions, Dutch and Japanese electronics, Indonesian batiks and Chinese embroidery, jewelry, leather, crystal, liquors, and fine porcelain, free of all taxes and customs, are regularly offered at bargain prices. The French side also provides a more leisurely shopping experience since the crowds from the cruise ships tend to be attracted more to the Dutch side.Duty-Free Shopping
