Life on Molokai moves at a slower pace, but island adventures abound. Hike Kamakou Nature Conservatory to explore a protected rain forest alive with colorful native birds and wildlife. Wander Papohaku Beach's three miles of sugary sand and hypnotic surf. Join a mule train down to the rugged shore of Kalaupapa Peninsula, at the base of 3,000-foot high Pali Cliffs. Experience the incredible majesty of the humpback whales you will encounter on a whale watching excursion. Molokai has it all!
Beaches: There are numerous beaches on the island of Molokai - whether you enjoy surfing, catching a few rays or exploring some of the island's more rugged terrain, there is a beach to fit your interests. Molokai's Papohaku Beach (also known as three mile beach) is one of the nicest and most private beaches in the Hawaiian Islands.
Fishing: Take a sport fishing boat out to catch your dinner. Or join locals in the evening by casting a line from Kaunakakai Wharf, where King Kamehameha V had a summer retreat. Fall and winter are peak fishing seasons at Halawa Beach County Park and there is great fishing along Molokai's cliff-edged north shore.
Golf: The championship Kaluakoi Golf Course uses the natural landscape of Molokai to provide fun and challenging greens. Keep an eye out for deer, pheasant and wild turkey that often roam the fairways! The number three hole on this course was recently named the third hardest hole in all the golf courses in Hawaii by the Seattle Post. Ironwood Hills Golf Club was built in 1938 and for almost 40 years was the only golf course on the island. Filled with hilly terrain, narrow, wooded fairways and small greens, this nine-hole course is entertaining and arduous.
Guided Tours: For assistance with activities on Molokai, including hiking, biking, horseback riding tours, fishing, whale watching excursions, or kayaking trips, contact the main hotel number at 808.553.5347 and ask for the concierge desk.
Halawa Valley: Halawa Valley was once the most populated area of Molokai. Here, you will find Moaula Falls and Hipuapua Falls, two of the island's smaller waterfalls, and the ancient heiau (sacrificial temple). According to legend, a fierce lizard lives under the pool at Moaula Falls. Before you take a dip, be sure to test the lizard's mood by throwing a ti leaf in the water. If the leaf sinks, the lizard is testy, so you may want to stay on dry land!
Kalaupapa National Historic Park: Nearby are the world's highest sea cliffs, which extend more than 3,000 feet. You may also see nearby Papalaua Falls and Hawaii's tallest waterfall, Kahiwa Falls, measuring 1,750 feet from top to bottom.
Molokai Museum & Cultural Center: The Molokai Museum is located inland from Hotel Molokai. This former working mill (the R.W. Meyer Sugar Mill) has been lovingly restored and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Scuba Diving: Scuba dive amongst the pristine waters of Hawaii's only barrier reef, located along the entire south side of the island. Spend an idyllic afternoon with the flora and fauna of the underwater world. Scuba and snorkeling gear may be rented by contacting the front desk in the Hotel Molokai lobby.
Whale Watching: Whale watching is easily enjoyed in Molokai, from the open-air restaurant Hula Shores, from the many beaches, or during a boat tour in Kaunakakai Harbor. The season for this popular Hawaiian activity is December through April. Located within the National Humpback Whale Sanctuary, the waters off Molokai have the most dense population of whales in the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months. Be sure to keep alert for dolphins and sea turtles too!
