Description & Details of Once In A Blue Moon Farm, Orcas Island
Come HOME to the "Family Farm!" We specialize in retreats for singles, couples, small families and large groups of up to 25 people on our 35 acre island farm and orchard.
We have multiple lodging options. Choose to stay in: 1) our spacious 3 or 5 bedroom split-level private guest home with party size outdoor dining decks and views, 2) our Carriage House Loft with full country kitchen, 2 queen beds, romantic red enamel heat stove & close up views of all the animals peacfully grazing in the surrounding pasture. This lodging is perfect for just one or up to 4 or 5 people, 3) Private suites in the main farmhouse lodge: perfect for singles, couples, and small families who do not need a private kitchen. These suites have view balconies, shared use of an old fashioned parlor with grand player piano as well as a family room with majestic stone fireplace and also use of the large kitchen for your own light preparation of meals.

When you reserve a lodging on our farm, Shana, the owner, will personally assist you with your Orcas Island vacation plans to make your special get-away go as smooth as possible. You will receive a confirmation packet outlining the detail of your lodging, an Orcas map and recreation guide, restaurant recommendations, a personal history of our farm, information about all the farm animals and available activities and or course information about our horseback riding programs.

On our farm you will see tractor pros working the land and gardeners tending numerous flower and vegetable beds, Chickens, turkeys, ornamental ducks, goats, sheep, llamas and horses will be grazing, swimming, pecking and talking all around the farm. (Don't be alarmed, the guest home is far enough away for your peaceful and quiet relaxation). We encourage you to hike around the upper pond and apple orchard where you will be treated with a wonderful view of the mountains of Canada's Vancouver Island-only 8 miles away. Continue from there into the forest paths in the woods beyond, but still part of the estate. As you walk back down to your lodging, visit the hen house and collect fresh eggs for the next morning's breakfast. You are also invited to to share in the fruit and vegetable bounty in season.

Children of all ages will enjoy observing or assisting with the horses and llamas at their scheduled morning and evening feedings. Best of all, feeding the chickens and hunting for their eggs is a chore everyone seems to enjoy. Another way to get ?hands-on' with the animals is to groom and walk one of our llama ladies. We have four: Llively Llily, LLady Catherine, Llovely Rita and the Mama Llama, Ms. Rapunzel. Our horses are 3 boys: Mango and Strider, both Tennessee Walking Horses (gait beautifully) and a little Arabian named Dancer. Whatever your riding ability may be, we can accomodate you. Experienced riders may choose among many different trail rides, all with opportunities for cantering as well as easy gaiting. Novices may take a gentle guided trail ride in the woods or stay in the safe enclosed arena with more staff guidance. Young children may go on a "pony ride" and they can double up with siblings, parents and even grandparents too! So have your camera ready!

Orcas Island offers many opportunities for all levels of hiking, biking, kayaking, boating and of course whale watching. Orcas is the "Gem" of the San Juan Islands and it is impossible to disappoint anyone, unless you can't live without the shopping mall. We have many art galleries and gift shops in all five of our charming country hamlets, and we are very proud to say we don't have any "chains," save for a Napa auto and a mini Radio Shack. No McDonald's or anything of the kind!

In summary, the choices for recreation are endless on beautiful Orcas Island. However, if you want to keep your vacation more like a retreat and spend most of your precious time all in one quiet place, then Once In A Blue Moon Farm is just right for you. Whether you come as a single with your dog, or part of a large party plus two playful dogs, or with just one other special person, you will discover how life can be simple and peaceful just like it use to be back on the "ole family farm" in the 1950's.

We hope to see you soon!
