This analysis was conducted by Rentalo.com on 11,489 opted-in vacation planners who inquired for vacation rentals in Oahu’s top vacation destinations from July 2008 to January 2010.
Oahu Destination: Honolulu
Honolulu is a destination preferred by couples. 41.41 percent of the total inquiries were from couples or parties of two, 30.60 percent were from families planning family vacations with children, and 22.52 percent were from people planning group getaways with 4 or more adults and children.
Honolulu visitors like to compare offers from different lodging types. 65.78 percent of the travelers who inquired on Honolulu vacation rentals also accepted to receive offers from bed and breakfasts and hotels.
About 22 percent also wanted to receive offers from Waikiki, Kahala, Kaneohe, Waimanalo, Mokuleia, Kailua, Hawaii Kai, Ewa Beach, Lanikai, Kapolei and Ko Olina.
It is a good idea to start looking in advance when visiting Honolulu. 51.99 percent of the Honolulu vacation rental seekers sent requests 3 or more months prior to arrival date, 19.90 percent did it 1-2 months in advance, and 24 percent with only 30 days left for arrival.
Oahu Destination: Kailua
Kailua visitors also like to book ahead. 52.78 percent of those looking for Kailua vacation rentals sent inquiries three or more months in advance of their stay, 21.03 percent did so within 30 days prior to the arrival date, and 22.08 percent was looking one to two months in advance.
They also showed interest in comparing offers from different lodging types. 66.70 percent of the travelers looking for Kailua vacation rentals also accepted to receive offers from hotels and bed and breakfasts, and 13.64 percent accepted offers from nearby destinations like Lanikai, Waimanalo, Kaneohe, Hawaii Kai, Waikiki, Kahala, Honolulu, Mokuleia and Ewa Beach.
According to the study, Kailua is popular among couples and families. 27.39 percent of the inquiries were for groups of four or more people, while 35.22 percent were families with children, 36.38 percent were couples or parties of two.
Oahu Destination: Waikiki
The study on Waikiki revealed that 65.43 percent of the travelers who inquired on Waikiki vacation rentals also wanted to compare offers from bed and breakfasts and hotels. 48.69 percent were also interested in receiving offers from Honolulu, Kaneohe, Kahala, Mokuleia, Waimanalo, Kailua, Lanikai, Hawaii Kai, Ewa Beach, Kapolei, Ko Olina.
Fifty-three percent inquired for rentals 3 or more months in advance, 18.30 percent did it one to two months in advance, and 24.80 percent only 30 days prior to arrival date.
Most inquiries received in Waikiki were from couples and parties of two, 29.14 percent of the inquiries were from families with children, 40.18 percent from couples, 19.63 percent from people planning reunions of larger groups, and solo travelers represented 11.08 percent.
