The Estero River meanders westward from the town of Estero, with lots of twists and turns through tropical surroundings, making it perfect for canoeing and kayaking. There are many sightings along the way of osprey, hawks, eagles, great blue herons, otters and other wildlife. A short distance from the south of the river is Mound Key State Park, the ancient Indian shell mound, with hiking trails and impressive views. Another interesting place to visit is the Koreshan State Historic Site, located on the banks of the Estero River. This site rates back to 1894 and has restored buildings and gardens. The town of Estero Florida is just thirty minutes to Fort Myers Beach, and a short drive to the famous shopping and fine dining at Naples and Sanibel Island. The nearby island beaches of southwest Florida are considered some of best in the state, with miles of soft, white sand and gorgeous turquoise waters. Estero Florida is only 15 minutes to southwest Florida International Airport and home to the new Corkscrew Village shopping Plaza.
